Sugar the Pony

Bringing learning to life  -  A visit from a Shetland Pony

Here at Shalford , we love to embrace our wonderfully rural setting and are thankful for the

learning opportunities it provides. We recently invited a little bit of the outside in, when we had a visit from Sugar the Shetland pony. Although Sugar did not sign the visitor book, she did walk right in the front door!

Each class has been reading a  book with an animal theme this half term and the visit from Sugar was just one of a handful of exciting experiences we have organised to deepen learning and provide real,

hands- on, tactile education - you can't learn everything from a book!

Chestnut class have been reading 'Warhorse' by Michael Morpurgo, so the event was initially organised for them, but every child and adult got to see Sugar. We learned about the care of horses, horse

anatomy, equipment, rescue horses and the many different breeds of horses and how they differ. Well done to every pupil for being so calm and well- behaved during the activity.

Huge thanks to the very knowledgeable Katie Furlong for organising this incredible experience and

giving up a whole afternoon for us, and to Sugar for being such a sweet and good-tempered visitor.
